About Z. Hamilton Avery

Z. Hamilton Avery, LCSW, BC-TMH, CMT, CYT-1,000, TIYT (he/they) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Therapy with Z, LLC. He provides affirming online psychotherapy to adolescents (13+) and adults in Oklahoma, Florida, South Carolina, and Idaho. Z has more than 15 years of experience supporting people across mental health, healthcare, crisis intervention, hospice, education, and community-based care.

People come to therapy for many reasons. Some know exactly what they want help addressing. Others know that something feels difficult, exhausting, painful, confusing, or unsustainable but are not yet sure what to call it. Z works with stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, suicidal thoughts, chronic illness and pain, grief and loss, burnout, major life transitions, identity-related concerns, serious mental illness, and complex life circumstances.

Z does not believe a person can be adequately understood by a diagnosis or symptom checklist. Mental health is connected to the rest of life. Physical health, relationships, family, work, identity, environment, past experiences, resources, values, community, and current circumstances can all affect how someone feels and functions.

Therapy creates an opportunity to understand those connections and determine where change may be possible. Z's approach is humanistic, person-centered, strengths-based, trauma-informed, harm-reduction oriented, inclusive, and affirming. Clients help determine the direction of therapy. Their priorities matter. Their preferences matter. Their feedback matters. Z does not expect every intervention to fit every person or every stage of therapy.

His clinical training includes CBT, DBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, compassion-focused therapy, EMDR, trauma-focused interventions, somatic approaches, and mindfulness-based practices. Sessions may focus on understanding patterns, processing difficult experiences, learning coping skills, strengthening emotional regulation, practicing self-compassion, increasing psychological flexibility, clarifying values, or finding different ways to respond to situations that feel overwhelming or stuck.

Z's style is warm, curious, collaborative, practical, and often humorous. He values straightforward communication and wants clients to feel comfortable asking questions or saying when something does not make sense. Therapy does not require a perfectly articulated problem or predetermined destination. The work can become clearer as the therapeutic relationship develops.

His professional experience includes outpatient psychotherapy, integrated primary care, community mental health, hospice and end-of-life care, mobile crisis services, 911 emergency communications and first response, school-based services, health education, and care delivered in people's homes and communities. Since 2010, Z has supported thousands of people across the lifespan. His work has included adolescents, adults, older adults, and people from diverse and historically underserved communities.

Z provides 2SLGBTQIA+ and neurodiversity-affirming care. He understands that identity can affect relationships, belonging, safety, healthcare experiences, family dynamics, community, and mental health. He also recognizes that a person's identity may have nothing to do with the reason they came to therapy. Clients decide what deserves attention.

Z has additional professional training in mindfulness, meditation, yoga, bodywork, and complementary and alternative medicine. He is a Certified Massage Therapist, Certified Reiki Master trained across multiple lineages, and Certified Yoga Teacher with more than 1,000 hours of accredited training, much of which he completed in India. His interdisciplinary education spans pre-nursing, psychology, and social work.

Z also provides non-clinical coaching to teens and adults nationwide. Outside individual services, he works as an educator and speaker and develops classes, workshops, professional trainings, retreats, and educational resources.

For Z, successful therapy is not about turning someone into a particular version of a healthy person. It is about helping clients understand themselves and their experiences more clearly, identify resources they already possess, develop useful skills, explore possibilities, and make changes that have meaning in their own lives.
